Saudi Arabia began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Uruguay in Group H, with defender Abdulelah Al-Amri emerging as the standout performer in an entertaining contest at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
In front of a crowd of 62,464 spectators, Saudi Arabia delivered a disciplined and resilient display against the South American side, earning a point that could prove crucial in the race for qualification.
At the heart of the performance was Al-Amri, whose influence extended far beyond his defensive responsibilities.

The Al-Nassr centre-back opened the scoring for Saudi Arabia and produced a commanding display at the back, earning widespread praise and a strong individual performance rating.
Saudi Arabia entered the halftime interval with a 1-0 advantage after Al-Amri capitalised on a quality opportunity inside the penalty area. Demonstrating the composure of a seasoned forward, the defender converted with a right-footed finish from close range to hand his side a deserved lead.
The goal capped an outstanding attacking contribution from a player whose primary role remains protecting his own goal.

Uruguay responded after the break, increasing the intensity and applying sustained pressure in search of an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off as they found a way back into the contest to level proceedings.
Despite conceding, Saudi Arabia remained organised and difficult to break down, thanks largely to the leadership and composure of Al-Amri.
The defender registered six clearances, won three of four aerial duels and completed a tackle and interception during a highly effective 90-minute performance. He was not dribbled past throughout the match and consistently positioned himself well to neutralise Uruguay’s attacking threats.
His contribution in possession was equally impressive.
Al-Amri completed 23 of his 27 passes, achieving an accuracy rate of 85 per cent. He maintained control under pressure and helped Saudi Arabia transition effectively from defence to attack.

The defender also carried the ball confidently when opportunities arose, providing additional support in possession without compromising his defensive duties.
Saudi Arabia’s disciplined approach frustrated Uruguay for long periods and ensured they left Miami with a valuable point from their opening fixture.
The result leaves Group H finely balanced and gives the Saudis confidence heading into their next match, while Uruguay will be left reflecting on a performance that failed to fully capitalise on their periods of dominance.
For Al-Amri, however, the evening belonged entirely to him. Combining defensive authority with attacking efficiency, the centre-back delivered one of the most complete individual displays of the tournament so far and underlined his importance to Saudi Arabia’s World Cup ambitions.
