Portugal were held to a 1–1 draw by DR Congo in their opening World Cup Group K fixture, as Roberto Martínez’s side failed to convert early dominance into victory.

João Neves gave Portugal a sixth-minute lead with a well-placed header from Pedro Neto’s cross.

However, DR Congo grew into the contest and stunned Portugal in first-half stoppage time when Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa was left unmarked to head home Arthur Masuaku’s cross.

Portugal controlled possession for long spells but struggled to create clear chances despite their attacking talent.

Cristiano Ronaldo, playing at his sixth World Cup finals at the age of 41, played the full match but was unable to find the net.

DR Congo threatened on the counter and showed defensive discipline to secure a valuable point in what was their first World Cup appearance in over five decades under their current identity.
