Austria marked their return to the World Cup with a hard-fought 3–1 victory over debutants Jordan in a tense Group J encounter in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the 21st minute with a stunning strike from outside the box after a fast start from both sides.

Jordan responded strongly after the break and equalised five minutes into the second half when Ali Olwan fired a superb effort in off the post.
Austria thought they had regained the lead through substitute Marko Arnautović, but his effort was ruled out for handball following a VAR review.
The breakthrough eventually came from a set piece, with Konrad Laimer’s corner deflecting off Yazan Al-Arab for an own goal to put Austria back in front.
Arnautović then played a decisive role again, winning and converting a stoppage-time penalty to complete the victory.

Despite defeat, Jordan impressed on their World Cup debut, with coach and players insisting they remain competitive in the group.
