Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has called on Nigerians to remain united and steadfast in the face of growing security challenges, urging citizens across political, ethnic and religious divides to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies in the fight against terrorism and violent crime.
The Governor made the appeal against the backdrop of recent attacks, kidnappings and killings in several parts of the country, warning that criminal elements must not be allowed to weaken the nation’s resolve or undermine confidence in Nigeria’s future.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu described the current security situation as a difficult but surmountable challenge, insisting that Nigeria had overcome greater trials in the past and would emerge stronger once again.
“Recent security incidents in parts of our country have understandably generated concerns amongst citizens. But moments like this in our national life require that we remind ourselves of our national character as a people. We are Nigerians. Our will is strong and our spirit is unbreakable,” he said.
The Governor stressed that insecurity affects all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation, religion or ethnicity and therefore requires a united national response rather than divisive rhetoric.
“The forces of evil confronting our nation do not ask for our political affiliation before they kill, maim and destroy. So must our resolve and support for our nation be devoid of political leanings and divisive rhetoric.”
Sanwo-Olu expressed sympathy for victims of recent attacks across the country and specifically referenced the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the incident as a national tragedy that demands collective concern and action.
He called on Nigerians to keep affected families in their thoughts and prayers while supporting efforts aimed at securing the safe release of those still in captivity.
According to him, the country has consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, overcoming economic difficulties, political turbulence, social tensions and security threats throughout its history.
“Our country has faced many challenges throughout its history. We have confronted economic setbacks, political instability, social tensions and security threats. Yet, through resilience, courage and unity of purpose, we have always emerged stronger. This moment will be no different.”
The Governor said terrorists and criminal groups thrive on fear and uncertainty, warning Nigerians against allowing such elements to dictate the national mood.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and actively support lawful security efforts through intelligence sharing and community cooperation.
“As citizens, we all have a stake in the security and stability of our country. Government alone cannot win this battle without the support, cooperation, vigilance and active intelligence sharing by local communities,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed his confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and the capacity of the nation’s military and intelligence agencies to overcome the current security challenges.
He praised security personnel serving on the frontlines, describing them as courageous patriots who continue to risk their lives daily to protect Nigerians and defend the country’s territorial integrity.
The Governor noted that ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, improve intelligence gathering and dismantle criminal networks would require patience, determination and sustained national support.
“Lasting solutions are rarely achieved overnight, but progress is possible when a nation stands firmly behind those charged with protecting it,” he said.
Addressing young Nigerians, families and communities across the country, Sanwo-Olu urged citizens not to lose hope despite the prevailing challenges.
“To our young people, I say: remain hopeful. To our families and communities, I say: remain resilient. To those serving on the frontlines of our nation’s security efforts, I say: remain steadfast. And to every Nigerian, I say: keep faith with our country.”
The Governor concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria would ultimately triumph over terrorism and criminality, insisting that the collective strength of the Nigerian people remains greater than the agenda of those seeking to spread fear and instability.
“This battle shall be won. Nigeria will prevail because the collective strength of our people is greater than the evil agenda of the few who are bent on making us live in fear and despair. Together, we will build a Nigeria safer within her communities and confident of her future.”
