Rights activist and prominent ally of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential hopeful Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, has withdrawn from the Federal Capital Territory senatorial race after the party reportedly decided not to conduct a primary election for the seat.

Yesufu announced her withdrawal in a statement released on Friday, days after her ambition suffered uncertainty following developments within the party.

The activist had formally declared her intention on May 6 to contest the FCT Senate seat under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

However, she revealed that the NDC leadership had resolved not to hold primaries for the Abuja senatorial seat, although primary elections for House of Representatives positions in the territory would still proceed.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives. Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.

Her announcement came amid widespread speculation that the party’s ticket may have been reserved for another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who was reportedly already active within the party before Yesufu joined.

The NDC had earlier dismissed reports of alleged fake primary results circulating online, insisting that official primaries were scheduled for May 29, 2026, and warning party members against relying on unofficial announcements.

Despite the setback, Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and stay focused on what she described as the larger political mission ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she stated.

She also expressed appreciation to supporters who had rallied behind her senatorial ambition under the #AishaForSenate movement.

“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project,” she added.

The activist further disclosed that she would return to the six Area Councils of the FCT to personally appreciate residents for the warm reception and encouragement she received during her consultations.

“In the coming week, I will be returning back to all the six Area Councils, God willing, to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she said.

Yesufu remains one of the most outspoken political activists in Nigeria and has consistently advocated for electoral reforms, accountability and citizen participation in governance.
