President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday announced national honours for dozens of pro-democracy activists, journalists, politicians and military officers who played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance, while also unveiling plans to immortalise late democracy advocate, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.

The announcements formed key highlights of the President’s Democracy Day address as Nigeria marked 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.

Tinubu said the national honours were in recognition of the sacrifices made by individuals who endured detention, persecution, exile, intimidation and other hardships during the struggle against military rule and the campaign to restore democratic governance.

According to the President, the recipients represent some of the most courageous voices and figures in Nigeria’s democratic journey whose contributions helped shape the freedoms enjoyed by citizens today.

Among those listed for national recognition are veteran journalists and public commentators including Tunde Fagbenle, Sam Omatseye, Bola Bolawole, Olatunji Bello, Louis Odion, Gbemiga Ogunleye and Babajide Kolade-Otitoju.

Also honoured are prominent democracy advocates and civil society figures such as Chief Ayo Opadokun, Joe Okei-Odumakin, Debo Adeniran, Femi Aborisade, Richard Akinnola, Prof. Sylvester Odion-Akhaine and several others who played active roles during the pro-democracy struggle.

The President also recognised a group of military officers he described as “soldier-democrats” for their contributions to the June 12 movement and the eventual return of democratic governance in Nigeria.

Tinubu said the full honours list would be formally released in the coming days.

The President paid glowing tributes to some of the most prominent figures associated with Nigeria’s democratic struggle, including the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, as well as the late Kudirat Abiola, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Alfred Rewane, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti, Frank Kokori, Arthur Nwankwo and several other democracy icons.

He described June 12 as a defining chapter in Nigeria’s history and a symbol of the nation’s collective determination to defend freedom, justice and representative government.

Kaduna Institution Renamed After Shehu Yar’Adua

In a move aimed at preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s foremost democracy advocates, Tinubu announced that the Federal Government had approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna.

The institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The President described the late Yar’Adua as one of the principal architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision, courage and commitment to national unity left an enduring mark on the country’s political development.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu said.

Yar’Adua, a former military officer and politician, was widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the pro-democracy movement before his death in detention in 1997.

His political organisation, the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), produced many of the political actors who later played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic transition.

Tinubu said the decision to immortalise Yar’Adua reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving the memory of those whose sacrifices contributed to the country’s democratic evolution.

The President stressed that the greatest tribute Nigerians can pay to the heroes of June 12 is to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold justice, expand opportunities for citizens and ensure government remains accountable to the people.

As Nigeria celebrates nearly three decades of uninterrupted democratic governance, Tinubu urged citizens to remain committed to the ideals of democracy and continue building a nation where freedom, justice and prosperity are accessible to all.
