Gunmen Kill Nine Residents, Injure 11 in Kaduna–Plateau Border Attack

At least nine people have been killed and 11 others injured following a deadly attack on Angwan Magaji community in Kamaru Ward of Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, a settlement located along the volatile Kaduna–Plateau border corridor.

The attack, which occurred at about 1 a.m on Wednesday, has once again highlighted growing security concerns in communities situated along the boundary between Kaduna and Plateau states, where residents have repeatedly faced violent attacks in recent years.

According to the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, armed assailants stormed the community in the early hours of the morning and opened fire on residents, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

Yonkpa explained that the majority of residents in the affected community are members of the Irigwe ethnic group, whose ancestral roots trace back to Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims killed in the attack were identified as Jerry Doctor 51, Danlami Magani 4, Sunday Chibi 53, Rita Abdullahi 45, Sunday Elkan 5, Esther Kefas 5, Happy Friday 6, Moses Daddy 4 and Daddy Ibrahim 28.

The casualty list reflects the devastating impact of the assault on families in the community, with several children among those who lost their lives.

In addition to the fatalities, 11 residents sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack. The injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment, according to community sources.

Confirming the incident, the National Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Dickson Auta, condemned the killings and described the attack as a tragic and deeply disturbing development.

Auta called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested and prosecuted.

He expressed concern over what he described as recurring attacks on communities within the area, warning that continued violence poses a serious threat to the safety and stability of residents living along the Kaduna–Plateau border.

According to him, the latest attack has further deepened fears among local communities already grappling with insecurity and displacement.

He urged the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to strengthen surveillance and deploy additional security measures to vulnerable communities in order to prevent future attacks.

Auta also appealed for swift government intervention to restore confidence among residents and reassure affected communities that their safety remains a priority.

"The incident has left families devastated and the entire community in mourning," he said, stressing the need for decisive action to halt the cycle of violence that has continued to claim lives in the region.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the attack, while residents continued to assess the scale of the destruction and support families affected by the tragedy.
