Brazil Convicts Bolsonaro's Son Over Efforts to Secure US Intervention

Brazil's Supreme Court has convicted Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, over efforts to secure US intervention in legal proceedings involving his father.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, 41, was sentenced in absentia to four years and two months in prison after being found guilty of lobbying American officials to pressure Brazilian authorities during the high-profile coup case against the former president.
Prosecutors accused the former congressman of seeking US sanctions and trade measures against Brazil in an effort to influence judicial proceedings connected to his father's trial.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has strongly denied wrongdoing.
Reacting to the ruling on social media, he described the conviction as "baseless and senseless" and claimed the judiciary was attempting to prevent him from pursuing future political ambitions.
He also alleged that he had been denied due process, insisting he was never formally served court documents and only became aware of developments through media reports.
Eduardo relocated to the United States in 2025, months before his father was convicted of plotting to overturn the results of Brazil's 2022 presidential election.
Jair Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022, was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in a broader effort to remain in power after losing to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The case centred on allegations that Bolsonaro and his allies sought to undermine democratic institutions and overturn election results. Investigators also linked the plot to the January 2023 attacks on government buildings in Brasília carried out by supporters of the former president.
Throughout his father's legal troubles, Eduardo Bolsonaro actively sought international support, particularly from political allies in the United States.
He has repeatedly argued that the prosecution of his father was politically motivated and has likened the case to what supporters describe as politically driven investigations elsewhere.
Former US President Donald Trump emerged as one of Jair Bolsonaro's most vocal international defenders.
Trump previously described the prosecution of the former Brazilian leader as a "witch hunt" and criticised Brazilian authorities over the case.
The close relationship between Trump and Bolsonaro dates back to their overlapping presidencies, during which both leaders frequently praised each other's political agendas.
Tensions between Brasília and Washington intensified after the United States imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Brazilian imports last year, a move President Lula criticised as economically unjustified.
The diplomatic dispute deepened when the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of judicial overreach in cases connected to Bolsonaro and his supporters.
Those sanctions were later withdrawn, but Lula's government strongly condemned them as interference in Brazil's internal affairs and judicial independence.
Eduardo Bolsonaro has previously told international media that he considers himself to be living in political exile in the United States and fears arrest should he return to Brazil.
The conviction further complicates the political future of one of Brazil's most prominent conservative families as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of the most divisive periods in its modern democratic history.
