The Federal Government has unveiled FreeTV, a new digital television platform that will provide Nigerians with access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription charges.

The initiative, launched under Nigeria's ongoing Digital Switch-Over (DSO) Programme, is aimed at expanding access to digital broadcasting services while supporting the growth of the country's creative and media industries.

With the new platform, viewers will be able to access a wide range of programming, including news, sports, movies, music, educational content, children's programmes and indigenous language channels at no cost.

The service will be available through satellite and terrestrial broadcasting networks, while users can also stream content via the FreeTV mobile application on smartphones and other compatible devices.

Government officials said Nigerians will not be required to purchase new television sets to enjoy the service. Existing television sets can access the platform using compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders, while many households already using free-to-air decoders may be able to connect immediately.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, said the platform represents a major step toward expanding access to digital content and strengthening Nigeria's broadcasting ecosystem.

According to him, FreeTV will not only improve access to quality television content but also create new opportunities for local content creators, producers and media professionals across the country.

The NBC noted that the initiative aligns with the government's broader objective of ensuring that citizens, regardless of their income level or geographical location, benefit from modern digital broadcasting technology.

The commission also said the platform is expected to stimulate economic activity within Nigeria's creative sector by increasing demand for locally produced content and creating employment opportunities throughout the media value chain.

To support content production and industry growth, regional production centres have been established in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin City. The centres are expected to generate jobs for producers, editors, camera operators, sound engineers, technicians and other media professionals.

The launch marks another milestone in Nigeria's transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, a process designed to improve picture and sound quality, expand channel capacity and create more room for local programming.

Despite the latest progress, authorities said Nigeria's final analogue television switch-off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028.

The Federal Government encouraged Nigerians to verify the compatibility of their decoders and take advantage of the new service as the country continues its transition to a fully digital broadcasting environment.

"You do not need to purchase a new television set to enjoy the service if you already have a compatible decoder," officials said during the unveiling.

The government believes the platform will significantly widen access to information, education and entertainment while accelerating the growth of Nigeria's digital media landscape.
