Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC, 2027 Presidential Candidate Mr. Peter Obi has decried Nigeria’s worsening security situation, accusing political leaders of prioritizing election preparations over the protection of lives and property.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi lamented the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in both Oyo and Borno states, noting that many of the victims remain in the hands of their captors weeks after their abduction.
According to him, national attention appears increasingly focused on political calculations rather than the urgent need to rescue vulnerable citizens and tackle insecurity.
The former Anambra governor referenced a series of recent attacks across different parts of the country as evidence of what he described as a growing national emergency.
He cited the killing of several residents and injuries sustained by others during an attack on Gwon-Ajang village in Plateau State as well as the abduction of dozens of people during a separate attack in Kogi State.
Obi also highlighted the killing of police officers in Anambra State and the abduction of students, teachers and school administrators in Oyo State.
He further recalled the kidnapping of scores of schoolchildren in Borno State, noting that many of the victims had remained in captivity for more than two weeks.
“Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens,” he stated.
Obi described the recurring attacks on schools and communities as unacceptable and warned that no nation could make meaningful progress when citizens lived under constant fear of violence and abduction.
He called for immediate and decisive measures to strengthen security operations, rescue those still in captivity and restore public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property.
Obi stressed that safeguarding citizens must remain the foremost responsibility of any government, urging leaders at all levels to place national security above political interests.
