APM says Presidency’s attacks show Tinubu fears Makinde’s 2027 challenge

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has said recent criticisms of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde by officials of the Tinubu administration indicate growing concern within the Presidency over the governor’s rising political profile ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party described the attacks on Makinde as evidence of anxiety within the ruling camp.

APM specifically criticised comments made by presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala, arguing that government spokespersons should focus on addressing national concerns rather than engaging in personal attacks.

According to the party, Makinde’s record in Oyo State has positioned him as a strong contender for the 2027 presidential election.

“The Presidency’s reaction reflects growing concern over Governor Makinde’s rising profile and acceptance among Nigerians,” the statement said.

The party maintained that the 2027 election would be a contest between Makinde and Tinubu, expressing confidence that Nigerians are seeking a new direction.

APM also claimed that the Tinubu administration lacks a convincing performance record to present to voters, arguing that many Nigerians are dissatisfied with the current state of the economy, security and infrastructure.

The party cited Oyo State’s economic performance and revenue growth under Makinde as evidence of his capacity to lead at the national level, adding that the governor’s administration has pursued policies aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding the economy and creating opportunities for residents.

The statement further said Makinde enjoys significant support among young Nigerians and that the party is optimistic about its chances in the 2027 election.

While defending its candidate, APM said it would not engage in a war of words with the Presidency.

“Our focus remains on issues. When government spokespersons resort to name-calling instead of addressing the challenges facing Nigerians, it suggests they have little to offer in terms of solutions,” the party stated.
