Trump Storms Out of NBC Interview After Clash Over Election Claims

US President Donald Trump abruptly ended a televised interview with NBC's Meet The Press after a tense exchange with presenter Kristen Welker over his repeated claims that elections in the United States had been manipulated.

The interview, recorded on Friday during Trump's visit to a farmers' event in Wisconsin and broadcast on Sunday, descended into a heated confrontation as the president was repeatedly challenged over allegations that California's ongoing primary elections and the 2020 presidential election were "rigged".

The dramatic walkout came nearly 50 minutes into the interview, which had already been plagued by technical disruptions and heavy rain striking the metal roof of the barn where the discussion was being held.

The confrontation intensified when Welker pressed Trump to provide evidence supporting his assertion that election officials in California were manipulating vote counts. The president argued that the delay in announcing results from several closely contested races was proof of wrongdoing.

"They're cheating on the election," Trump said, referring to California's vote-counting process.

When Welker asked whether he had evidence to support the allegation, Trump replied: "All I have to do is look, and I listen."

The NBC presenter immediately pushed back, saying: "But that's not evidence."

The exchange marked a turning point in the interview.

Trump responded by accusing both the media and the presenter of dishonesty.

"They're crooked, just like you're crooked," he said.

Welker rejected the accusation, replying: "To be fair, I'm not crooked. But let's continue."

As tensions escalated, Trump doubled down, telling the journalist she was "either crooked or stupid" before abruptly signalling an end to the conversation.

"Let's call it quits because I've had enough. Thank you darling, have a good time," the president said.

Although Welker attempted to continue with her questioning, Trump interrupted, complaining about the conditions under which the interview had taken place.

"I've sat in the rain with you for an hour, on and off in the rain, and I've given you enough time," he said.

Turning his criticism toward the broader media establishment, Trump added: "You ought to straighten out your press, because you know what? A country can never be great with a dishonest press."

Moments later, he gestured to aides and production staff behind the cameras and walked off the set.

The dramatic ending underscored Trump's long-running and often combative relationship with traditional media organisations, which he has frequently accused of political bias and unfair coverage throughout his political career.

Before the clash, much of the interview focused on foreign policy, particularly rising tensions in the Middle East. Trump defended recent US actions aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and insisted that any military involvement would not evolve into a prolonged conflict.

"We're there for a few months and the threat is largely over," he said.

The conversation also touched on a controversial proposal known as the "anti-weaponisation" fund, a now-abandoned plan that would have established a $1.8 billion compensation scheme for individuals who claimed they had been unfairly investigated or targeted by federal authorities.

Critics, including Democrats and some Republicans, argued that the initiative could have opened the door to compensation claims from individuals prosecuted in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

It was during that discussion that the interview returned to the subject of the 2020 election, a topic that has remained central to Trump's political rhetoric despite courts, election officials and multiple investigations finding no evidence of widespread fraud capable of altering the election outcome.

Following Sunday's broadcast, Welker revealed that she had spoken with Trump after the interview and that both parties acknowledged the difficulties caused by the weather. According to the presenter, the president has agreed to sit down for another edition of Meet The Press at a future date.

The exchange is likely to reignite debate over Trump's continued election claims, his relationship with the media, and the increasingly confrontational nature of political discourse in the United States as the country heads deeper into another contentious election cycle.
