President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits in Katsina State, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need to intensify the fight against terrorism and violent crime.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended his condolences to the family of the deceased officer, the government and people of Katsina State, as well as the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Tinubu also expressed concern over the continued captivity of the late general’s wife, who remains in the hands of the abductors.

The President stated that while the terrorists had inflicted pain on the nation through their actions, the government would remain resolute in its determination to defeat criminal groups threatening national security.

“The terrorists have done their worst,” Tinubu said.

He reiterated the position he stated during his Democracy Day address, warning bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face the full force of the law.

“As I said on June 12, bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian state.

“These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” the President declared.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and confident in the ability of the country’s security agencies to overcome the threats posed by terrorists and criminal gangs.

“We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation,” he said.

The President further described General Abubakar’s death as a defining moment in Nigeria’s battle against terrorism and insurgency.

“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms, but to continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation, who should never be spared,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Army has also mourned the late military officer and former Director of Defence Information.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the committee described the death of General Abubakar as a painful loss to the nation.

“Throughout his career and in retirement, he served Nigeria with honour and continued to contribute meaningfully to national security discourse,” the statement read.

The committee extended condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the Nigerian Army, the people of Batsari Local Government Area and the government of Katsina State.

“We pray that Almighty Allah grants him Aljannah Firdaus and gives his family the fortitude to bear this loss,” the committee stated.

The lawmakers also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening national security and protecting Nigerians.

“We reaffirm our commitment to working with the Executive and security agencies to strengthen measures that protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.

“We also salute the dedication of our security personnel and urge all citizens to remain united and patient as efforts to restore peace continue,” the statement added.

General Rabe Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, along the Katsina-Matazu Road while travelling to his hometown.

His death in captivity has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger action against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
