The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to his family, Katsina State and the nation at large.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who disclosed that the retired military officer died during captivity after suffering complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.

According to the government, sustained efforts by the Katsina State Government and security agencies to secure the release of the retired general were unsuccessful before his death.

“The deceased retired general died a natural death resulting from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.

The government noted that the late Major General Abubakar served Nigeria with distinction during his military career and described his death as a significant national loss.

It added that his abduction and eventual death underscore the grave security challenges confronting communities in parts of the country.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep sorrow over the development and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.

The governor described the incident as a painful reminder of the need for intensified efforts to tackle banditry and other forms of criminality threatening lives and livelihoods across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.

Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are identified and brought to justice.

He also assured residents that the state government remains resolute in strengthening security measures aimed at protecting lives and property throughout Katsina State.

“The loss of Major General Rabe Abubakar is not only a personal tragedy for his family but a painful loss to the state and the nation he served with dedication,” the governor said.

The government called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information and cooperation in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

It also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the late retired general’s soul and for strength and comfort for his family during this difficult period.

The death of Major General Abubakar adds to growing concerns over the activities of armed bandits in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and attacks on communities continue to pose significant security challenges despite ongoing military and law enforcement operations.
