The House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Rep. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who represented Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

The lawmaker reportedly died in Abuja after a brief illness, according to a statement issued on Friday by the House spokesman, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi.

His death was confirmed by the Gombe State Caucus in the House of Representatives.

Describing the development as a painful loss to the National Assembly, Gombe State and the nation, the House said Tongo dedicated his life to public service and the advancement of his constituents.

“His passing marks the end of a distinguished life devoted to public service and the advancement of his constituents, Gombe State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.

The House noted that before his election to the National Assembly, Tongo had served in several public offices, including Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Gombe State Government and member of the Gombe State House of Assembly.

Until his death, he served as Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group, where he worked to strengthen legislative and diplomatic relations between both countries.

The House described him as a seasoned grassroots politician, dedicated legislator and respected parliamentarian whose experience and contributions enriched legislative debates and governance.

“A respected voice within the Parliament and a passionate advocate for the welfare and development of his constituents, Hon. Tongo brought wisdom, experience and a deep understanding of governance to legislative deliberations,” the statement added.

On behalf of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, the leadership and members of the House extended condolences to the family of the deceased lawmaker, the people of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, and the government and people of Gombe State.

The House prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for his family, constituents and colleagues during this difficult period.

Tongo’s death marks another loss for the National Assembly, where he was widely regarded as a committed lawmaker and advocate for grassroots development.
