At least seven people have been killed and six others injured following a violent confrontation between Farmers and Herders in Bauchi State, in yet another reminder of the persistent tensions over land and agricultural activities in parts of Northern Nigeria.
The incident occurred on Thursday in Lanzai and Dosho communities within Darazo Local Government Area, leaving dozens of homes destroyed and residents displaced.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the violence began after suspected Fulani herders allegedly attacked local farmers who were applying organic fertiliser on their farmlands near Lanzai community.
The attack reportedly sparked outrage among local youths who mobilised in retaliation and launched an assault on Dosho, a neighbouring Fulani settlement.
During the reprisal attack, approximately 50 huts were set ablaze while household property worth millions of naira was destroyed.
Police spokesman SP Nafiu Habib confirmed that seven persons lost their lives during the violence, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
“The incident resulted in the death of seven persons, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment,” he said.
The violence caused extensive damage to residential buildings and personal belongings, further worsening humanitarian concerns in the affected communities. Security agencies swiftly deployed tactical units to the area to prevent further escalation and restore order. Police authorities said calm has since returned, although security presence remains heightened.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has directed a full-scale investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of the clash. He assured residents that all individuals found responsible for either the initial attack or the retaliatory violence would be brought to justice.
The latest tragedy adds to a long history of conflicts between farming and pastoral communities across parts of Nigeria, where disputes over grazing routes, farmland and access to resources have repeatedly triggered deadly confrontations.
