Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of Nigeria’s late former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, has lost the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP governorship primary election, held in Kano, ended in favour of Muhammad Bello Dalhatu, who secured a decisive victory over Abacha during the exercise.

Party officials announced that Dalhatu polled 2,233 votes, while Mohammed Abacha managed 749 votes. The outcome means Abacha will not represent the PDP in the 2027 Kano governorship election, despite his high-profile political background and campaign efforts ahead of the primary.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of party officials and monitored by stakeholders across the state.

Political observers described the result as one of the major upsets recorded so far in the ongoing party primary season ahead of the 2027 general elections. The defeat also adds to the growing list of influential political figures who have failed to secure party tickets in highly competitive contests across the country.

Dalhatu’s emergence is expected to shape the political landscape in Kano as parties intensify preparations for the governorship election.
