Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has approved a grand reception for two students from the state who won gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, after describing their achievements as a testament to the state's investment in education.
The students, Onyedikachi Egejurum and Don Anele Munachisom, delivered outstanding performances at the global competition, bringing international recognition to both Imo State and Nigeria.
Eleven-year-old Onyedikachi Egejurum emerged the world's best in Mathematics in the primary school category after winning a gold medal, while Don Anele Munachisom secured gold in Science in the secondary school category.
The duo were among the three Nigerian students who won gold medals at the international competition held in Rome.
The students were sponsored to the competition by education advocate and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia, after emerging as top performers during the South-East edition of the STEM competition.
In a congratulatory message, Governor Uzodimma praised the students for making Imo State proud on the global stage.
He said their exceptional performance reflected the impact of his administration's sustained investment in education across primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
"We have invested heavily in education from the primary level to secondary and to the tertiary level, and we are happy that those investments are yielding fruits," the governor said.
Uzodimma also commended individuals and organisations that identified, mentored and sponsored the students to the international competition, describing them as partners in the state's educational advancement.
He said the government would continue to encourage excellence and nurture young talents through strategic investments in education.
According to the governor, the planned reception is part of a broader initiative to recognise outstanding academic achievements and inspire more students to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
He reiterated his administration's commitment to the infrastructural and academic revitalisation of the education sector, expressing confidence that more Imo students would continue to distinguish themselves in national and international competitions.
