Ebonyi Governor’s Convoy Involved In Road Incident, Advance Rider Hospitalised

An advance rider attached to the convoy of Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has been hospitalised after a vehicle collided with the governor's convoy during an incident on Wednesday.

The injured security operative is receiving medical treatment, while security personnel attached to the convoy arrested the occupants of the vehicle involved and impounded it.

Videos of the incident, which have circulated widely on social media, also showed the vehicle's windscreen damaged during the aftermath of the collision.

Reacting to the incident, the Governor's Special Assistant on New Media, Leo Oketa, described the development as unfortunate and expressed gratitude that no lives were lost.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident. We wish the injured advance rider a full and speedy recovery and are grateful that no lives were lost," he said.

Oketa urged the public not to draw conclusions based solely on videos circulating online, noting that short clips often fail to capture the complete sequence of events.

"While the video has generated considerable public reaction, it is important to recognise that short clips shared on social media often capture only a fraction of an event and may not present the full sequence of what transpired.

"We therefore urge the public to exercise restraint and avoid reaching conclusions until all the facts are known," he stated.

The Ebonyi State Government also used the opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of complying with lawful traffic instructions whenever they encounter security convoys or emergency response vehicles.

According to Oketa, advance riders and convoy personnel are deployed to alert road users, secure intersections where necessary and create a safe passage that protects both public officials and other road users.

He noted that the same principle applies to ambulances, fire service vehicles and other emergency responders, where delays could have life-threatening consequences.

"Whether it is an ambulance rushing a patient to the hospital, a fire service vehicle responding to an emergency, a security convoy protecting public officials, or other authorised emergency responders, every second can be critical," he said.

He stressed that motorists have a legal and civic responsibility to obey traffic directives issued by police officers and other authorised officials.

"The safety of every road user remains paramount. Cooperation with emergency and security personnel is not merely a legal obligation; it is a civic responsibility that helps prevent avoidable tragedies and enables life-saving and security operations to be carried out safely," he added.

Oketa further said Governor Nwifuru remains committed to professionalism, respect for the rule of law and the protection of human life.

He appealed to motorists to remain vigilant, exercise patience and cooperate with security personnel whenever they encounter official convoys or emergency vehicles on the road.

"A few moments of caution and cooperation can save lives. Let us all remember that road safety is a shared responsibility. Every life matters," he said.
