The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a man in his mid-30s for allegedly stabbing his father, retired pilot Captain David Nwoke, to death at their residence in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred at Oro Ekpo Estate, Ada George, on Thursday morning and has left residents of the community in shock.
Residents said the estate's security personnel raised an alarm at about 10 a.m., informing neighbours that one of the landlords had allegedly been attacked and killed by his son.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly on the matter, said neighbours rushed to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.
"We received a distress call from the estate gate that one of our landlords had been killed by his son. When we got there, we found Captain David Nwoke lying in a pool of blood after he had allegedly been stabbed by his son," the resident said.
According to the witness, police officers from the Rumupakani Police Division responded promptly to the distress call, arrested the suspect and evacuated the victim's body to a mortuary.
The resident further alleged that the suspect had previously exhibited violent behaviour towards his father, claiming there had been repeated incidents of harassment and assault.
He also alleged that the deceased had recently decided to sell one of his properties, a decision that reportedly angered the suspect.
According to the account, the confrontation escalated inside the residence before the suspect allegedly attacked his father with a knife.
The resident claimed the victim, despite sustaining injuries, managed to move downstairs before he was allegedly pursued and stabbed repeatedly.
The source described the attack as appearing deliberate, though that claim has not been independently verified by investigators.
The incident reportedly occurred at Oro Ekpo Estate in the Rumupekirikom area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, near the Gateway axis and close to Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church.
Residents have called on law enforcement authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution if criminal responsibility is established.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect remains in police custody.
"I can confirm that the suspect is in police custody. Investigations have commenced with a view to ensuring that justice is served," she said.
Police have yet to disclose the suspect's identity or announce any formal charges as investigations continue.
