Florentino Pérez Re-Elected Real Madrid President After Historic Vote

Florentino Pérez has secured another term as president of Real Madrid after defeating businessman Enrique Riquelme in the Spanish club's first contested presidential election in nearly two decades.

The veteran football administrator, who has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club's history, won 65 per cent of the vote, reinforcing his grip on leadership at the Santiago Bernabéu and extending an era that has transformed Real Madrid into a global football powerhouse.

Official results announced by the club's electoral commission showed Pérez receiving 21,741 votes, while his challenger, 37-year-old entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme, secured 11,814 votes, representing 35 per cent of ballots cast.

Pérez declared victory during a celebratory speech delivered at a hotel near the Bernabéu Stadium on Sunday, describing the outcome as a triumph for democracy and for the millions of supporters who identify with the club's values.

"It is a beautiful day for me and for all Madridistas," Pérez told supporters.

The 79-year-old club chief praised members for participating in the election and said the process demonstrated how democratic institutions should function.

"We've obtained the second-best result in the history of Real Madrid elections. It is an extraordinary result. Today, Real Madrid won. We've shown an example of democracy to the world. We'll keep working for Real Madrid to keep winning trophies," he said.

The victory further strengthens Pérez's legacy at the club. Since returning to the presidency in 2009 after an earlier spell between 2000 and 2006, he has overseen unprecedented sporting and commercial success.

Under his leadership, Real Madrid have won seven UEFA Champions League titles, including triumphs in 2022 and 2024, as well as seven La Liga championships. His tenure has also been marked by major infrastructure projects, most notably the extensive redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Despite the defeat, Riquelme struck a conciliatory tone, congratulating Pérez and thanking members who supported his campaign.

"I want to congratulate Florentino Pérez's candidacy on the victory," he said while addressing supporters outside his campaign headquarters.

Riquelme also stressed the importance of member participation and reiterated his commitment to preserving the club's ownership structure.

"We know that Real Madrid isn't for sale," he declared.

The election followed a two-week campaign triggered by Pérez's surprise decision to call an early vote. The move was widely interpreted as an effort to seek renewed backing from club members following two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.

While criticism of Pérez has remained limited compared to many football executives, some supporters had questioned the club's recent sporting direction and recruitment strategy.

Nevertheless, Sunday's result demonstrated overwhelming confidence in the man many supporters credit with building one of the most dominant football institutions in modern history.

With a fresh mandate secured, Pérez now faces the challenge of restoring Real Madrid to the summit of European and Spanish football while navigating an increasingly competitive football landscape.

For now, however, the election result sends a clear message: Real Madrid's members remain firmly behind the president who has shaped much of the club's modern golden era.
