Nigerian-British Singer Talay Riley Fatally Stabbed in London

The international music community is mourning the tragic death of Nigerian-British singer and songwriter Talay Riley, who was fatally stabbed in East London in an incident that has triggered a major murder investigation.

Riley, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, died after an attack on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown on Friday morning.

He was 35.

According to local reports, emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 9 a.m. following reports of a stabbing. Despite efforts by paramedics, the acclaimed songwriter could not be saved.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Command have launched a homicide investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.

"It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark 'Yinka' Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning," the family said. They described him as a gifted musician whose influence extended far beyond the recording studio.

"Talay will fondly be remembered by those who knew him publicly for his incredible talent as a Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and artiste.

"For those that knew and loved him personally, it is his humour, generous spirit and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most."

The family also thanked supporters worldwide for the outpouring of sympathy that followed news of his death.

Throughout a career spanning more than a decade, Riley established himself as one of the most respected songwriting talents in contemporary R&B and pop music.

He entered the music industry at just 18 after signing a publishing agreement with Global Publishing and quickly earned recognition for his songwriting abilities.

His profile rose significantly following his appearance on rapper Chipmunk's 2009 hit single, a breakthrough that eventually led to a recording contract with Jive/Sony Records.

Over the years, Riley collaborated with and wrote for some of the biggest names in global music, including Kehlani, H.E.R., Khalid and several emerging international acts.

He also shared stages with major performers such as Skepta, Usher and Trey Songz, earning a reputation as both a skilled songwriter and captivating live performer.

One of the most emotional tributes came from his younger brother, renowned music producer Scribz Riley.

In a deeply personal message posted on Instagram, Scribz described the pain of losing someone who was not only a sibling but also a mentor, confidant and inspiration.

"My heart is shattered. This doesn't feel real. It feels like a bad dream," he wrote.

"Just before he went to sleep, we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation."

He continued: "Yinka wasn't just my brother. He was my mother's son, a friend to many, a mentor, an inspiration, and a light in so many people's lives."

The tribute captured the profound sense of loss being felt across both the music industry and among those who knew Riley personally.
