Crystal Palace secured the first European title in the club’s history after defeating Spanish side Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League final at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Wednesday night.

A composed second-half finish from French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta proved decisive as the Premier League side completed another remarkable chapter in what has become the most successful era in the club’s history. After a tense and evenly balanced first half, Palace finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute.

Mateta reacted quickest inside the penalty area after Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla parried an initial effort into danger, with the striker calmly tapping home from close range to send Palace supporters into wild celebrations. The English side nearly doubled their lead moments later in dramatic fashion.

A stunning free-kick from Yeremi Pino crashed against both goalposts before ricocheting off a Rayo defender and striking the woodwork again in one of the most bizarre sequences of the final. Despite trailing, Rayo Vallecano pushed aggressively for an equaliser in the closing stages, dominating possession and launching repeated attacks around Palace’s penalty area.

However, the Premier League side defended resolutely, with their backline and goalkeeper producing a series of crucial interventions to preserve the narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The victory marks Crystal Palace’s third trophy in just two seasons following their FA Cup triumph last year and Community Shield success at the start of the current campaign.

The Conference League title also further underlined the dominance of English clubs in European competitions this season.

After Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph last week, the Premier League could complete a clean sweep of UEFA club competitions if Arsenal defeat Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s Champions League final.

For Palace fans, however, the night in Leipzig will remain unforgettable as the South London club finally crowned its recent rise with a historic European trophy.
