Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested following a motorway crash in southern England, adding fresh controversy to an already challenging period in the footballer’s career.
According to Hampshire Police, officers responded to reports of a Lamborghini colliding with motorway barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident and no injuries were reported.
Following the incident, police arrested a 31-year-old man from Berkshire on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug and failure to provide a specimen.
Although police did not officially identify the suspect, British media reports named Sterling as the individual involved.
The former Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea winger has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
Representatives for Sterling declined to comment publicly on the matter.
The development comes amid a difficult phase in the player’s professional career.
Once regarded as one of England’s brightest football talents, Sterling enjoyed tremendous success at Manchester City, winning multiple domestic titles and establishing himself as a key figure for both club and country.
However, his fortunes have declined since leaving City in 2022.
A move to Chelsea failed to revive his form, and subsequent spells elsewhere yielded limited success. Most recently, Sterling endured a frustrating stint with Dutch club Feyenoord, where he struggled for game time and failed to make a significant impact.
The winger earned 82 caps for England and featured prominently during the country’s recent international campaigns, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Police say investigations remain ongoing.
