FG Begins Process to Repatriate Over 1,000 Nigerians From South Africa

The Federal Government has commenced plans to repatriate more than 1,000 Nigerian nationals from South Africa amid growing concerns over renewed anti-immigrant tensions and rising hostility towards foreign nationals.

Officials disclosed that screening for the voluntary repatriation programme began on Thursday, with authorities expecting over 1,000 Nigerians to benefit from the initiative.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed that preparations were underway, although the final number of participants had yet to be determined.

The move follows recent reports of anti-immigrant demonstrations and incidents targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, a country that has historically attracted workers and migrants from across Africa.

Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria disclosed that it had negotiated waivers with South African authorities to allow Nigerians with immigration-related offences to participate in the repatriation programme without facing detention before departure.

South Africa continues to grapple with unemployment rates exceeding 30 per cent, a situation that has often fuelled tensions between citizens and migrant communities.

Recent protests and calls for the removal of undocumented migrants have revived concerns about xenophobia and the safety of foreign nationals living in the country.

The South African government has pledged to intensify enforcement against illegal immigration while urging citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Analysts say the development highlights broader continental debates over migration, economic opportunities and the challenges of implementing pan-African ideals amid domestic socio-economic pressures.
