The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to embrace the values of sacrifice, compassion and unity as Muslims across the country celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.
In a goodwill message posted on his official X account on Wednesday, Obi congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and around the world, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a solemn occasion that reflects enduring values of faith, obedience to God, love for humanity and selfless service.
The former Anambra State governor said the spiritual significance of the celebration comes at a crucial moment for Nigeria as citizens continue to grapple with economic hardship, insecurity and social uncertainty. “Let us concentrate our prayers on unity and hope during this year’s Sallah,” Obi stated.
“As we contemplate the deep lessons inherent in this solemn celebration, we are reminded of the importance of selflessness, tolerance and dedication to the common good. These principles are particularly vital as our nation navigates this pivotal phase in its history.”
Obi said the essence of Eid-el-Kabir reinforces the belief that sacrifice and perseverance are necessary for national progress, stressing that Nigerians must not lose faith in the possibility of building a more functional and equitable society. “Nigeria possesses immense potential, yet it is currently burdened by avoidable challenges,” he said. “The essence of Eid-el-Kabir reinforces the belief that fulfilment follows sacrifice. We must maintain our hope in the realisation of a functional, just, and productive nation where every citizen is included.”
The NDC presidential candidate also called on Nigerians to remember security personnel serving in conflict zones and volatile regions across the country, describing their sacrifices as vital to national stability and peace.
He urged citizens to pray for wisdom for political leaders and for meaningful economic relief for millions of Nigerians facing rising living costs and worsening economic pressures. “During this sacred period, let us remember to pray for our security personnel on the frontlines, invoke wisdom for our leaders and seek meaningful economic relief for the populace enduring the weight of our collective hardships,” he stated.
Obi further appealed for peaceful coexistence across ethnic, religious and regional lines, warning against divisions capable of undermining national unity. He said Nigerians must recommit themselves to mutual respect, tolerance and dialogue regardless of political or religious differences.
“Let us recommit to fostering peace, mutual respect, and unity among various faiths and regions,” he added.
The opposition figure concluded by wishing Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration, while expressing optimism that Nigeria can still overcome its current difficulties through justice, compassion and responsible leadership.
“May this Eid-el-Kabir bring joy to our families, peace to our communities, and renewed hope to our beloved nation,” Obi said.
