The Shehu Maishanu-led Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its preferred aspirant ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for May 25 in Abuja. The endorsement was announced during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Gusau on Saturday.
The ADC presidential screening committee had earlier cleared Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatudeen to participate in the party’s presidential primary election.
The meeting was attended by state executive members, national representatives from Zamfara State as well as candidates contesting governorship, National Assembly and House of Assembly seats under the party platform. Following extensive deliberations, stakeholders unanimously declared support for Atiku, describing him as a seasoned statesman with the experience and leadership qualities required to address Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.
Participants at the meeting cited Atiku’s background in public service and private enterprise, describing him as a bridge-builder committed to economic reform, inclusive governance and national unity. They also expressed confidence in his capacity to tackle insecurity, revive economic growth and restore stability across the country.
The stakeholders pledged to mobilise support for the former vice president across all local government areas, wards and polling units in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the meeting, Abubakar Abdullahi, a former APC Zamfara Central Coordinator for the 2023 presidential election, expressed optimism that future elections would reflect the genuine will of the people.
He stated that the ADC remained committed to grassroots mobilisation and issue-based political engagement.
The meeting also featured the affirmation of several party candidates for the 2027 elections.
Former Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau emerged as the ADC governorship candidate for Zamfara State after defeating two other aspirants during the party primary.
Chairman of the governorship primary committee, Namadi Musa, announced that Aliyu-Gusau secured 35,665 votes to defeat Abdul’mutallab Ahmed Mohammed and Shehu Ahmed Musa.
ADC State Chairman, Shehu Maishanu, commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the primaries and urged members to remain united ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party also unveiled candidates for senatorial and House of Representatives seats across the state.
