A catastrophic explosion deliberately targeting a transit train packed with Pakistani military personnel and their civilian families has killed at least 20 people and left more than 70 others with severe injuries at the Chaman Phatak railway station in Quetta, the provincial capital of the volatile Balochistan region.
The lethal attack occurred early Sunday morning as the specialized shuttle train was slowly moving out of a nearby military encampment toward Quetta's main railway terminal. The passengers on board, consisting primarily of military service members, their wives and children, were traveling toward Peshawar to catch connecting transit routes back to their hometowns for the upcoming Eid holidays.
Railway administrative officials confirmed that the immense force of the blast instantly derailed the train's main locomotive engine and three passenger coaches, completely overturning two heavily packed carriages. The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows for blocks and caused extensive structural damage to a commercial building adjacent to the tracks.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a highly active and prohibited separatist insurgent group, officially claimed responsibility for the carnage, explicitly stating that the operation was executed by a specialized suicide bomber. While federal law enforcement agencies have initiated an immediate forensic sweep, they have yet to formally confirm the suicide bomber designation.
Naseer Ahmed, a local resident living near Chaman Phatak station, described the moments following the blast: "The train was in active motion and completely filled with passengers when the bomb went off. It was a Sunday morning, so my entire family was still asleep in bed. The shockwave instantly shattered every single window pane in our house and filled the street with black smoke."
With an official emergency declared across all public and military hospitals in Quetta, medical directors have warned that the death toll is highly likely to rise over the coming days, given that dozens of the hospitalized victims are currently listed in critical condition with severe blast trauma and shrapnel wounds.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, issued a fierce national address strongly condemning the incident, stating that such cowardly acts of terrorism would never weaken the resolve of the Pakistani state or its military apparatus. He added that the entire nation stands in absolute solidarity with the people of Balochistan during this time of national grief.
This latest strike fits into a calculated, multi-year campaign by the BLA targeting national rail infrastructure. The armed group has repeatedly struck the Jaffar Express passenger line and famously hijacked an entire train in March 2025, taking dozens of civilians hostage.
The BLA has long justified its armed campaign by accusing Pakistan's centralized federal government of systematically exploiting Balochistan's immense mineral, gas and gold wealth without allowing any economic benefits to trickle down to the local population.
Covering nearly 44 percent of Pakistan’s total landmass but housing only 5 percent of its 240 million citizens, Balochistan shares porous, highly unstable borders with both Iran and Afghanistan. This geographical position has allowed militancy to thrive, with a major surge of violence between BLA fighters and security forces earlier this year already claiming the lives of dozens of civilians.
