The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered a decisive phase as all 48 participating nations unveiled their final squads for what promises to be the biggest tournament in football history.

For the first time, the World Cup will feature 48 countries, expanding the competition beyond its traditional 32-team format and offering more nations the opportunity to compete on football’s grandest stage.

Hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the tournament is expected to attract billions of viewers worldwide as football’s elite battle for the most coveted trophy in the sport.

The final squad announcements have brought excitement, surprises and intense debate among supporters, with coaches making difficult decisions on which players will represent their countries.

Among the headline names are eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, French superstar Kylian Mbappé, Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland, England captain Harry Kane and Egyptian icon Mohamed Salah.

The tournament will also showcase a new generation of talents expected to define football’s future. Among them are Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal, Brazilian wonderkid Endrick and Mexico’s teenage prospect Gilberto Mora.

For Africa, the tournament represents another opportunity to challenge the traditional football powers. Nations from across the continent have assembled squads blending experienced internationals with emerging talents as they seek to build on the historic achievement of Morocco National Football Team, which became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.

South Africa’s squad includes captain Ronwen Williams, veteran midfielder Themba Zwane and Burnley striker Lyle Foster as Bafana Bafana prepare for a return to the global stage.

The 2026 edition is also set to highlight the contrast between generations. Scottish goalkeeper Craig Gordon arrives as one of the tournament’s oldest participants at 43, while several teenagers will be making their first appearance at football’s greatest event.

Football analysts believe the expanded format could increase the chances of surprises, allowing emerging football nations to challenge traditional giants and create new World Cup stories.

With final squads now confirmed, attention turns to preparations, tactical adjustments and injury management as nations begin the final stretch toward a tournament expected to redefine the scale and reach of the FIFA World Cup.

For millions of football fans across the globe, the journey to North America has officially begun.
