Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his WBC heavyweight title in dramatic and controversial circumstances after stopping former kickboxing world champion Rico Verhoeven in the 11th round of their blockbuster crossover fight staged beneath the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

The highly anticipated bout produced one of the biggest shocks in recent heavyweight boxing history as Verhoeven, making his first major appearance in professional boxing, pushed the unbeaten Ukrainian champion into one of the toughest contests of his career.

Despite entering the fight as a heavy underdog, the Dutch kickboxing icon dominated significant portions of the contest with aggressive combinations, physical pressure and powerful right-hand shots that repeatedly troubled Usyk. Verhoeven stunned fans and commentators alike after taking several early rounds, landing clean punches that pierced Usyk’s defence and disrupted the champion’s rhythm.

At different points during the fight, ringside analysts suggested the Ukrainian star was trailing on the scorecards as Verhoeven continued pressing forward with relentless attacks. The Dutch fighter’s size and physicality appeared to affect Usyk’s movement, while the crowd gathered beneath the historic pyramids erupted whenever Verhoeven landed heavy combinations.

By the middle rounds, the momentum appeared firmly with the former kickboxing champion, who repeatedly forced Usyk onto the defensive. However, the Ukrainian gradually regained control as the contest entered the championship rounds, increasing his output and landing more precise combinations.

The decisive moment came in the 11th round when Usyk connected with a sharp right uppercut that sent Verhoeven stumbling toward the corner. Although the Dutchman managed to beat the referee’s count and appeared prepared to continue fighting, the referee controversially waved off the bout with only seconds remaining in the round.

The stoppage immediately sparked heated debate among fans and boxing analysts, many of whom argued that Verhoeven had recovered sufficiently to continue. The controversial ending overshadowed what many described as an exceptional performance from Verhoeven, who exceeded expectations against one of boxing’s elite champions.

The event also featured major title fights on the undercard. England’s Hamzah Sheeraz stopped Begic to claim the WBO super-middleweight title, while Jack Catterall defeated Giyasov to capture the WBA welterweight belt.
