South Africa's World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end after Stephen Eustaquio's stoppage-time goal handed Canada a dramatic 1-0 victory and a historic place in the Round of 16.

With the contest seemingly destined for extra time, Eustaquio produced the decisive moment in the second minute of added time, firing a superb low effort beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to send the Canadian players and supporters into celebration at Los Angeles Stadium.

The result makes Canada the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the co-hosts will face either Morocco or the Netherlands on July 4 in Houston.

For South Africa, however, the late defeat brought an end to an encouraging tournament in which Bafana Bafana had advanced from the group stage but struggled to impose themselves against an energetic Canadian side.

Canada dominated much of the match and came close to taking the lead several times before finally finding the breakthrough.

Moise Bombito thought he had opened the scoring with a powerful header, only for Aubrey Modiba to produce a remarkable goal-line clearance to keep South Africa level.

Canada also appealed for a first-half penalty after Richie Laryea went down inside the box following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau. However, after a VAR review, officials upheld the on-field decision, much to the frustration of Canada head coach Jesse Marsch.

The former Leeds United manager was visibly unhappy with the decision and had to be restrained from confronting match officials at half-time.

The introduction of Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies, returning from injury, injected fresh energy into the attack, while Jonathan David and Promise David both went close as South Africa's defence was repeatedly tested.

Despite Canada's dominance, Ronwen Williams and his defenders appeared to have done enough to force extra time.

But with penalties looming, Eustaquio settled the contest in dramatic fashion.

The Porto midfielder controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area before drilling a precise low finish into the corner in the 92nd minute, leaving Williams with no chance and sending the home supporters into wild celebrations.

Canada finished the match with seven shots on target and were widely regarded as deserving winners after creating the better opportunities throughout the contest.

Speaking after the final whistle, an emotional Marsch praised his players for making history.

"You guys are Canadian heroes," he told his squad during the team's post-match huddle.

"Think about the two years we've been together. Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan, sticking to who we want to be and showing your character.

"You are Canadian heroes for the future children of this country. This sport has a huge future because of you."

The victory marks another milestone for Canada, who entered this tournament having never won a World Cup finals match before defeating Qatar 6-0 in the group stage.

Now, the co-hosts have progressed beyond the group stage for the first time and will look to continue their remarkable run against either Morocco or the Netherlands.

For South Africa, the defeat ends a spirited World Cup campaign in cruel fashion, with a disciplined defensive display undone by a moment of quality in stoppage time.
