Nikola Vlasic scored a dramatic late winner as Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1 on Saturday to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, finishing second behind England in Group L.

With qualification hanging in the balance, Zlatko Dalic's men produced a composed display before Vlasic's decisive header seven minutes from full-time sealed Croatia's passage into the knockout rounds and extinguished Scotland's remaining hopes of progressing.

Although already assured of a place in the next round, Ghana pushed Croatia all the way and will also advance after finishing among the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Croatia controlled much of the opening half and deservedly broke the deadlock through Petar Sucic, who produced one of the finest goals of the tournament.

The Inter Milan midfielder collected a pass from Mateo Kovacic before drilling a superb low right-footed strike from distance through the legs of defender Derrick Luckassen and into the bottom corner.

Earlier, Vlasic had gone close with a long-range effort that skimmed the outside of the post as Croatia continued to dominate possession and create the better opportunities.

Ghana, meanwhile, struggled to threaten before the interval, failing to register a shot on target for the third consecutive first half at the tournament.

The Black Stars returned from the dressing room with renewed intensity following the introduction of winger Abdul Fatawu, whose pace and direct running immediately troubled Croatia's defence.

Their improved display was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen rose highest to head home Ernest Nuamah's inviting cross.

The goal was initially delayed by a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review lasting almost four minutes over a possible offside involving Kwasi Sibo.

After consultation, referee Drew Fischer confirmed that Sibo had not interfered with play, allowing the equaliser to stand.

With momentum swinging Ghana's way, Croatia suddenly found themselves under pressure.

Just when Ghana looked capable of holding on for a valuable draw, Croatia's experience proved decisive.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare first produced an outstanding one-handed save to deny Mario Pasalic, but from the resulting pressure, veteran captain Luka Modric delivered a pinpoint corner that Vlasic powered home with a clinical header in the 83rd minute.

The goal secured Croatia's second victory of the group stage and ensured they progressed as Group L runners-up.

Croatia will now face Portugal, runners-up in Group K, in the Round of 32 in Toronto on Friday, July 3.

Despite the defeat, Ghana's group-stage campaign was strong enough to earn progression as one of the competition's best third-placed teams. The Black Stars will meet Colombia, winners of Group K, in Kansas City on Saturday, July 4.

For Croatia, the victory keeps alive hopes of another deep World Cup run after reaching the 2018 final and the 2022 semi-finals, while Ghana will take confidence from a resilient performance that showed they remain capable of challenging the tournament's biggest teams in the knockout stage.
