Austria regained the lead after the restart through Marcel Sabitzer, who finished confidently after excellent work from Konrad Laimer, briefly putting Iran back in line for qualification.

But Algeria refused to back down.

Captain Riyad Mahrez restored parity after meeting a superb delivery from Houssem Aouar, capping another flowing Algerian move to make it 2-2.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Algeria looked content to settle for a draw that would send both teams through.

Instead, Mahrez stunned the stadium by grabbing his second goal of the night with only moments remaining, seemingly putting Austria's qualification hopes in jeopardy.

However, there was one final twist.

Deep into added time, towering striker Sasa Kalajdzic rose highest to power home a dramatic equaliser, sparking wild celebrations among the Austrian players and supporters as both sides secured their places in the Round of 32.

The draw proved devastating for Iran.

Team Melli needed either Austria or Algeria to lose in order to qualify among the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Kalajdzic's dramatic equaliser ultimately ended those hopes, bringing Iran's World Cup campaign to a painful conclusion.

The elimination capped a difficult tournament for the Iranians, who faced challenges away from the pitch, including travel restrictions, visa issues affecting members of their delegation and logistical complications throughout the competition.

The encounter also carried significant historical significance.

Forty-four years after the controversial 1982 "Disgrace of Gijón", when Austria and West Germany played out a result that eliminated Algeria from the World Cup, many feared another mutually beneficial draw could overshadow the match.

Instead, both teams delivered an attacking spectacle, treating the 69,045 fans inside Arrowhead Stadium to one of the most entertaining games of the tournament.

Austria's reward for finishing second in Group J is a Round of 32 clash with European champions Spain on Thursday in the Los Angeles area.

Algeria, meanwhile, progress as one of the best third-placed teams and will face Switzerland on Thursday night in Vancouver.

While both nations celebrated qualification, the evening belonged to the drama of stoppage timeva thrilling finale that reshaped the Group J standings and produced one of the defining matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.
