Japan produced a spirited comeback to hold the Netherlands to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their opening Group F match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before a crowd of 69,285 spectators in Texas on Sunday.
In a contest that burst into life after the interval, the Japanese twice came from behind to deny the Dutch all three points and secure a valuable result in what is shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.
The Netherlands enjoyed the brighter start and nearly took the lead within three minutes when Donyell Malen turned sharply inside the penalty area and forced an excellent save from Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Ronald Koeman’s side continued to dominate possession and looked dangerous from set-pieces. Malen again tested Suzuki with a powerful header before Cody Gakpo fired over the bar.
Japan’s first meaningful opportunity arrived shortly before half-time when Keito Nakamura found space inside the box but dragged his effort wide of the target.

The breakthrough eventually came six minutes into the second half.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet a precise cross from club teammate Ryan Gravenberch, directing a superb header into the bottom corner to give the Dutch a deserved lead in the 51st minute.
However, Japan responded swiftly.
Just six minutes later, Nakamura wriggled free inside the area and drilled a low effort beyond goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The ball took a slight deflection off Jan Paul van Hecke before finding the back of the net, restoring parity at 1-1.

The Dutch regained their advantage on 64 minutes through an outstanding individual effort from Crysencio Summerville.
The winger beat his marker on the right flank before curling a superb left-footed strike into Suzuki’s bottom-right corner to make it 2-1.
With defeat looming, Japan continued to press forward as both managers introduced fresh legs.
Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion two minutes from time when Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada was credited with the equaliser after a chaotic goalmouth situation from a corner kick resulted in the ball finding its way into the net.

The late goal ensured the spoils were shared, leaving both sides with a point apiece to begin their World Cup campaigns.
The result maintains the unbeaten hopes of two nations widely regarded as potential dark horses at the tournament, with the Netherlands still chasing a first World Cup title after three runner-up finishes, while Japan continue their pursuit of a historic breakthrough beyond the Round of 16.
