Four-time world champions Germany launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion on Sunday, crushing tournament debutants Curacao 7-1 in a one-sided Group encounter in Houston.
The Germans produced a clinical attacking display to secure their first opening-match victory at a FIFA World Cup since their triumphant 2014 campaign in Brazil.

Felix Nmecha opened the scoring for Germany before Curacao briefly stunned their illustrious opponents through Livano Comenencia, whose strike not only levelled proceedings but also etched his name into history as the scorer of Curacao’s first-ever World Cup goal.

The moment sparked celebrations among the travelling Curacao supporters and marked a significant milestone for the Caribbean nation despite the eventual outcome.

Germany, however, quickly reasserted their dominance.
Kai Havertz led the charge with a brace, while Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav also found the back of the net as Germany overwhelmed the World Cup newcomers.
The victory provides an ideal start for the Germans as they seek to reclaim football’s biggest prize, while Curacao face the challenge of regrouping after a difficult introduction to World Cup football.

Despite the heavy defeat, Comenencia’s historic goal ensured the match will remain a memorable chapter in Curacao’s football history.
