Ukraine PM Yulia Svyrydenko Resigns as Zelensky Orders Major Government Reshuffle

Ukraine's Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, resigned on Tuesday after President Volodymyr Zelensky initiated a broad government reshuffle aimed at repositioning the country's leadership as it confronts mounting wartime challenges.
Ukraine's parliament formally approved Svyrydenko's resignation, bringing an end to her one-year tenure after she was appointed prime minister in July 2025.
Although President Zelensky has not announced her successor, he said the changes are part of a broader effort to adjust Ukraine's political strategy in response to evolving national priorities.
"We are changing our political strategy" to meet "new challenges and new tasks," the Ukrainian president said while announcing the cabinet restructuring.
The reshuffle comes at a critical stage in Ukraine's more than four-year war with Russia, as Moscow continues to intensify ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian cities while Kyiv seeks to strengthen its air defence capabilities, including plans to domestically produce U.S.-made Patriot air defence systems.
Svyrydenko was widely regarded as one of Ukraine's key economic policymakers and maintained strong working relationships with U.S. officials. She played a leading role in negotiating the minerals investment agreement between Ukraine and the United States following President Zelensky's high-profile Oval Office meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
While announcing the changes over the weekend, Zelensky disclosed that he had offered Svyrydenko another senior government role that would focus on managing relations with one of Ukraine's key international partners, though he did not specify the country involved.
Throughout her tenure, Svyrydenko focused largely on economic management and international cooperation, as Ukraine sought to sustain financial support from allies while keeping its economy functioning during the war.
Reacting to her departure, the outgoing prime minister said her administration had achieved "concrete results" during its time in office and shared a photograph of herself making a heart symbol with her hands while addressing parliament.
Attention has now shifted to who will lead the next government.
Local media reports have identified Sergiy Koretsky, the Chief Executive Officer of Ukraine's state-owned energy company, Naftogaz, as the leading candidate to replace Svyrydenko.
Zelensky met Koretsky over the weekend shortly after announcing plans for the cabinet reshuffle and publicly praised his "effective leadership" of Ukraine's energy sector.
The energy portfolio remains one of Ukraine's most critical sectors as repeated Russian missile and drone attacks have severely damaged electricity infrastructure, resulting in widespread power outages, particularly during the winter months.
Under Ukraine's political system, however, the prime minister's office plays a limited role in military strategy and battlefield operations, with President Zelensky and the country's military leadership retaining primary responsibility for directing the war effort.
