Troops of Joint Task Force (North-West) Operation Fansan Yamma have recorded significant operational successes in separate security operations across Zamfara and Kaduna states, leading to the arrest of a suspected arms courier, the recovery of a substantial cache of ammunition and the rescue of dozens of rustled cattle.
The operations, carried out by troops under Sectors 1 and 2 of the military task force, form part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist logistics networks, disrupt criminal activities and enhance security across the North-West region.
In one of the operations, troops deployed at a security checkpoint in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, intercepted a civilian vehicle travelling towards Shinkafi Local Government Area on June 5, 2026.
According to military authorities, a detailed search of the vehicle uncovered a locally fabricated pistol, a magazine and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition carefully concealed inside a sack containing millet and other items.
The discovery led to the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect identified as Mustapha Abubakar, who is believed to be involved in the illegal transportation and distribution of arms and ammunition to terrorist groups operating within the North-West.
Military sources disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect was on a mission to deliver the weapons and ammunition to an accomplice when he was intercepted by troops.
The suspect has since been taken into custody, while all recovered exhibits have been secured as investigations continue.
Security authorities said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal network believed to be involved in the supply chain supporting terrorist and bandit groups in the region.
The interception represents another setback for criminal elements whose operations depend heavily on the movement of weapons and ammunition across vulnerable corridors in the North-West.
In a separate operation, troops of Sector 1 Operation Fansan Yamma successfully thwarted an attempted cattle rustling operation in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The operation followed a distress call from a local herder whose cattle had reportedly been rustled by armed criminals.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence received, troops mobilised and strategically positioned themselves along the suspected escape route being used by the rustlers.
Military authorities said the troops subsequently encountered the suspects while they were attempting to move the stolen livestock out of the area.
A gun battle ensued, forcing the rustlers to abandon the cattle and flee into nearby bushes under intense military pressure.
Following the operation, troops successfully recovered 53 cattle, which were later handed over to their rightful owner.
The military described the recovery as a significant relief to the affected herder and a demonstration of its commitment to protecting the livelihoods of citizens whose economic survival depends on livestock farming
The latest successes underscore the ongoing efforts by Operation Fansan Yamma to degrade terrorist and bandit networks, cut off access to weapons and ammunition and combat criminal activities that threaten communities across the North-West.
Military authorities commended the troops involved in the operations for their vigilance, professionalism, resilience and swift response to emerging security threats.
The Theatre Command also appealed to members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information capable of aiding ongoing operations.
According to the military, community cooperation remains critical to achieving lasting peace, stability and security across the North-West theatre and other parts of the country affected by criminal activities.
