Tinubu's Best No Longer Enough to End Insecurity, Peter Obi Says

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has said President Bola Tinubu has done his best to address Nigeria's security challenges but argued that the country's worsening insecurity requires a higher level of leadership, competence and capacity.

Obi made the remarks during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, published on YouTube on Thursday, while outlining his vision ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Reacting to recent comments by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who said President Tinubu had tried his best to tackle insecurity, Obi said the respected cleric gave an honest assessment of the President's efforts.

"Somebody asked me yesterday, they said that Pastor Adeboye said Tinubu has tried his best and he's not happy. And I said, no, Pastor Adeboye remains a very revered, respected religious father, whom I believe in his genuineness and goodness.

"And what he said was correct. He said he has tried his best. He's trying his best. That's it. It's the correct answer. The question to ask is: Is his best good enough? Where we find ourselves today, that leads to the issue of capacity."

Obi argued that Nigeria's leadership challenge is no longer about effort alone but about the ability to effectively address the country's deepening security and economic crises.

According to him, leadership should be measured by competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character.

"When I talk about leadership, I say competence, capacity, compassion, commitment, character. These are the issues. President Tinubu is tired. He needs to go home and rest," Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to assess his own record in public office alongside the policies he is proposing ahead of the next general election.

"It's for you to look at my past and look at what I'm saying now," he added.

Obi's comments came days after Pastor Adeboye defended President Tinubu against criticism over the country's worsening security situation.

The cleric had argued that the President had fulfilled his constitutional responsibility by directing the military and other security agencies to confront insecurity rather than personally participating in military operations.

However, Adeboye also expressed concern over the continued wave of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country and called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to combat violent crimes and those financing criminal activities.

Obi has repeatedly identified insecurity and economic recovery as central issues that will shape Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.
