Presidency Rejects Peter Obi’s Safety Concerns, Calls Claims False and Misleading

The Presidency has dismissed claims by the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, that his life is under threat and that he is being targeted by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

SkyHigh News Hub had earlier reported Obi's allegation that persistent actions by the Federal Government were frustrating him and had raised concerns about his personal safety ahead of the 2027 general election.

Reacting in a post on his X handle on Wednesday night, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the claims as "unfounded and misleading", insisting the Tinubu administration was not targeting the opposition politician.

According to Onanuga, Obi's assertion that he may not be alive to contest the January 2027 presidential election and that people were being discouraged from inviting him to public events was a fabricated narrative.

"His claim that he may not be alive for the January 2027 election and that people are being pressured not to invite him to social events is nothing more than a fabricated narrative, a page from his book of lies and propaganda," Onanuga said.

He argued that the allegations lacked substance and were intended to attract public sympathy while diverting attention from what he described as Obi's political challenges.

The presidential aide also accused the former Anambra State governor of blaming the government for personal inconveniences and making exaggerated allegations without evidence.

Responding to Obi's reference to an airport incident in which officials allegedly locked his vehicle, Onanuga suggested the situation may have resulted from a violation of parking regulations rather than political persecution.

Onanuga further dismissed suggestions that the Federal Government was targeting Fidelity Bank, in which he claimed Obi has substantial interests.

He maintained that the financial institution had continued to perform strongly under the Tinubu administration's economic reforms.

"The government is certainly not targeting the bank. Rather than being 'haunted' by the government, Mr Obi appears to be grappling with the consequences of his litany of unfounded statements," he said.

The presidential spokesman added that the Tinubu administration remains focused on implementing its reform agenda and would not be distracted by what he described as Obi's "self-serving narratives."

He insisted that the government has neither the time nor the inclination to target the opposition leader, stressing that its priority remains delivering economic reforms and governance for Nigerians.
