President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, on his election as Chairman of the African Association of Accountant-Generals (AAAG), describing the achievement as a significant honour for Nigeria and a reflection of the country's commitment to transparency and accountability in public financial management.
Ogunjimi was elected during the association's Annual General Meeting held in the Kingdom of Eswatini, where he defeated candidates from Tanzania and The Gambia in a closely contested election.
In a statement issued on Friday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Ogunjimi's emergence as chairman of the continental body demonstrates Nigeria's growing leadership role in promoting sound financial governance across Africa.
According to the President, the election is not only a personal milestone for the Accountant-General but also an endorsement of Nigeria's efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and excellence in public finance administration.
Tinubu expressed confidence that Ogunjimi would use his tenure to deepen collaboration among African countries, promote the exchange of best practices and advance reforms aimed at improving public financial management across the continent.
He also said the new AAAG chairman possesses the experience, expertise and leadership qualities required to steer the association and support its objectives.
The President urged Ogunjimi to continue promoting prudent financial management and institutional capacity building among member countries while strengthening cooperation between African public finance institutions.
Tinubu wished the Accountant-General a successful tenure and assured him of the Federal Government's full support as he assumes his new continental responsibility.
The African Association of Accountant-Generals serves as a platform for collaboration among heads of government accounting institutions across the continent, promoting best practices in public financial management, fiscal transparency and accountability.
