The long countdown is finally over as the FIFA World Cup 2026 gets underway, ushering in what many observers believe will be the most ambitious and transformative edition of football’s biggest tournament.

The competition opens on June 11 in Mexico City and will culminate with the final on July 19 in New York/New Jersey, where the next world champion will be crowned.

For the first time in the history of the tournament, three nations Canada, Mexico and the United States, are jointly hosting the World Cup, reflecting FIFA’s vision of expanding the global reach of football and delivering the sport’s premier event on an unprecedented scale.

The 2026 edition also marks the debut of the expanded 48-team format, a significant departure from the traditional 32-team competition that has been in place since 1998.

The expansion is expected to increase participation, provide opportunities for more nations to compete on football’s biggest stage and deliver a record number of matches to fans around the world.

Defending champions Argentina arrive as one of the favourites after their triumph in Qatar four years ago. However, football powerhouses including Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, England and Portugal are also widely tipped to challenge for the trophy.

Africa heads into the tournament with one of its strongest representations in World Cup history. The continent's hopes rest on Algeria, Cabo Verde, DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia.

Expectations are particularly high following Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022, which demonstrated that African teams can compete with the world's elite on the biggest stage.

Matches will be played across 16 host cities spread throughout North America. Mexico will host games in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, while Canada’s fixtures will take place in Toronto and Vancouver.

The United States will host the majority of matches across major cities including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tournament organisers are projecting record attendance figures and global television audiences, with billions of viewers expected to follow the month-long spectacle.

Beyond the football itself, FIFA has introduced several innovations designed to enhance the tournament experience. These include a star-studded official soundtrack featuring global music acts, with Nigerian Afrobeats stars Davido, Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr earning places on the tournament’s official album.

The tournament's official match ball, the adidas TRIONDA, symbolises the unity of the three host nations and incorporates design elements inspired by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Fans will also be introduced to three official mascots representing the host countries Maple the Moose for Canada, Zayu the Jaguar for Mexico and Clutch the Bald Eagle for the United States.

FIFA believes the enlarged competition will create new commercial opportunities, deepen fan engagement and accelerate football’s growth in emerging markets around the world.

As players, coaches and supporters prepare for weeks of drama, excitement, heartbreak and celebration, the stage is set for a tournament that could redefine international football and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

From the opening whistle in Mexico City to the final showdown in New York/New Jersey, World Cup 2026 promises to deliver a global celebration of sport, culture and unity unlike any seen before.
