‘The Criticism Will Exist’: Lupita Nyong’o Addresses Debate Over Helen of Troy Role

Lupita Nyong'o has responded to criticism surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, saying she is more concerned with the depth of the character and the vision of the story than online backlash.

Nyong’o, who will portray both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the film, addressed the controversy in an interview with Elle Magazine ahead of the movie’s scheduled theatrical release on July 17.

“The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” Nyong’o said, dismissing pressure to defend her casting amid debates that emerged on social media after the project was announced.

The actress said Nolan’s interpretation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic was designed to reflect the scale and universality of mythological storytelling rather than rigid historical assumptions often attached to classical characters.

“This is a mythological story,” she said. “I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it, and with the version of this story that he is telling.”

Nyong’o added that the film’s ensemble casting reflects the expansive nature of the narrative.

“The Odyssey is so grand. It spans worlds. That’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time,” she said.

The debate surrounding her role intensified online after some critics questioned the decision to cast a Black actress as Helen of Troy, a figure traditionally depicted in Western art and literature as the embodiment of classical beauty. Some reactions on social media also carried racial undertones, reigniting broader conversations in Hollywood about representation, interpretation and creative freedom in adaptations of historical and mythological works.

Nyong’o, however, said her approach to acting goes beyond physical appearance.

“An actor can’t perform beauty,” she explained. “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?”

Nolan publicly defended the casting, praising Nyong’o’s emotional range and screen presence as central to his vision for the character.

“The strength and the poise were so important to the character of Helen, and Lupita makes it look effortless,” Nolan said. “I was absolutely desperate for her to do the part.”

The film features one of Hollywood’s most high-profile ensemble casts in recent years, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie and Travis Scott.

Nyong’o described the opportunity to portray Helen of Troy as one of the defining honours of her career.

“She is iconic,” the actress said. “What more can I say? I’m so deeply honoured to be entrusted with her.”

The film, to be distributed by Universal Pictures, is already being positioned as one of the most anticipated global cinema releases of the year, with industry analysts closely watching whether Nolan’s adaptation can match the critical and commercial scale of his previous blockbusters.
