Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram have attacked Kautikari community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a resident and destroying educational facilities before being repelled by security forces.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday evening, targeted the rural community located about 20 kilometres from Chibok town, an area that has repeatedly experienced insurgent activities over the years.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the attackers attempted to overrun the community but were successfully pushed back by members of the Joint Task Force stationed in the area.

"Yes, I can confirm to you that there was an attempted attack on Kautikari community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State by suspected ISWAP/Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday evening," Daso said.

According to him, the insurgents succeeded in killing a 50-year-old man during the attack and also set ablaze two classroom blocks before security personnel engaged them and forced them to retreat.

"According to the Divisional Police Officer in Chibok, the attackers succeeded in killing a 50-year-old man and set ablaze two blocks of classrooms in the community and were later repelled by security operatives in the area," he added.

The latest attack has heightened concerns among residents of remote communities across southern Borno, especially as the rainy season and farming activities gather momentum.

Many farmers in the region depend heavily on access to farmlands during this period and recurring attacks have continued to threaten livelihoods and food production.

Security agencies have maintained increased surveillance in the area while efforts continue to prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities.
