The House of Representatives has approved a fresh extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from June 30 to September 30 2026.
The approval was granted during plenary on Monday following a motion sponsored by the House Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere.
Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, said the extension was necessary to ensure the full implementation of projects captured under the budget and to maximise the impact of government spending.
Following the motion, lawmakers suspended relevant rules and accelerated consideration of the proposal, taking it through first, second and third readings in quick succession.
The House decision aligns with a similar resolution passed by the Senate last week.
The latest extension marks the third time the National Assembly has adjusted the implementation timeline for the capital component of the 2025 budget.
In December 2025, lawmakers approved a three-month extension that shifted the deadline to March 31 2026, after repealing and re-enacting aspects of the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts.
On March 31, both chambers again approved another extension, moving the deadline from March 31 to June 30.
Speaking during Senate consideration of the measure last week, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele warned that implementation levels remained below expectations.
“This situation, if not urgently addressed, risks exacerbating the already troubling incidents of abandoned or partially executed projects across the country,” he said.
The latest extension is expected to provide ministries, departments and agencies additional time to complete ongoing capital projects and improve budget performance before the new deadline.
