Portugal 5-0 Uzbekistan: Ronaldo Makes World Cup History With Record-Breaking Double

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cups as Portugal delivered a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in a one-sided Group K encounter.
The 41-year-old forward produced a vintage display, scoring twice and leading Portugal's attacking charge as Roberto Martinez's side responded emphatically to criticism following their opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo.
Ronaldo's historic moment arrived just six minutes into the match when he met Joao Cancelo's low cross with a composed first-time finish at the near post, sending Portugal ahead and securing his place in World Cup history.
The goal also made Ronaldo the second-oldest player ever to score at a World Cup, behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 during the 1994 tournament in the United States.

Portugal doubled their advantage in the 17th minute through left-back Nuno Mendes, whose low free-kick from outside the penalty area beat the goalkeeper directly and left Uzbekistan struggling to recover.
The Central Asian side briefly thought they had pulled one back when Aziz G'aniev produced a stunning finish, but the effort was ruled out after Abbosbek Fayzullaev was penalised for a foul in the build-up.
Ronaldo struck again six minutes before halftime to put the result beyond doubt.
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes won possession near the halfway line before threading a perfectly weighted pass into Ronaldo's path. The Portuguese captain calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner for his second goal of the evening and Portugal's third.
The goal carried further significance as it moved Ronaldo past Portuguese icon Eusebio to become Portugal's highest-scoring player in World Cup history.
Portugal continued their dominance after the break.
Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov endured a difficult evening and was credited with an own goal after a Portugal corner created confusion inside the penalty area, with the ball eventually bouncing off him and into the net.
Substitute Rafael Leao completed the rout late in the match, firing a powerful finish into the roof of the net to seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

The result sends Portugal to the top of Group K, although Colombia could overtake them if they defeat DR Congo in their next fixture.
For Uzbekistan, the defeat leaves them without a point after two matches and facing an uphill battle to progress from the group stage in their debut World Cup campaign.
Ronaldo Answers Critics In Style
Ronaldo entered the match under scrutiny after an underwhelming performance against DR Congo, where he recorded just 25 touches, the fewest of any Portugal outfield player who completed the full game.
However, the veteran forward delivered a timely response.
His opening goal ended an 11-match drought across major international tournaments, including both the World Cup and European Championship, while his overall performance demonstrated that he remains capable of influencing games on football's biggest stage.
He nearly completed a hat-trick later in the match, only for Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov to clear an audacious chipped effort off the goal line.
At the final whistle, a visibly delighted Ronaldo celebrated his achievement and his return to form after producing one of the standout individual performances of the tournament so far.

The achievement comes just days after Lionel Messi became the leading goalscorer in World Cup history with a brace against Austria.
While Messi has now scored at five different World Cups, Ronaldo's strike against Uzbekistan allowed him to become the first player ever to find the net in six separate editions of the tournament.
Ronaldo has now scored 10 World Cup goals, having registered goals at the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
His latest record further strengthens his legacy as one of the greatest players in football history and provides Portugal with renewed belief as they pursue a first World Cup title.

Portugal next face Colombia in what is expected to be a decisive Group K showdown, while Uzbekistan will attempt to keep their slim qualification hopes alive against DR Congo.
