Kylian Mbappe delivered another masterclass on a chaotic night interrupted by severe weather as France defeated Iraq 3-0 to move to the verge of qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The France captain scored either side of a lengthy thunderstorm delay, while Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembele added a second-half goal as Les Bleus maintained their perfect start to the tournament with a dominant Group I victory.

The result gives France six points from two matches and leaves them all but assured of a place in the last 32, while Iraq's hopes of progression now hang by a thread.

For Mbappe, the night carried added significance.

His brace took his World Cup tally to 16 goals, drawing him level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose in second place on the tournament's all-time scoring chart. Only Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who earlier scored twice against Austria to reach 18 World Cup goals, now stands ahead of him.

The French forward has also moved to four goals at the tournament, leaving him just one behind Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

France controlled proceedings from the opening whistle and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Mbappe produced a moment of trademark brilliance.

Receiving a pass from Michael Olise on the edge of the penalty area, the Real Madrid star shifted the ball onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful strike beyond Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil to hand France an early lead.

The goal reflected France's superiority during a first half in which Iraq spent long periods defending and struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

However, the match would soon be overshadowed by events off the pitch.

As players headed into the dressing rooms at halftime, heavy rain and thunderstorms intensified around Philadelphia Stadium, forcing tournament officials to suspend play.

Supporters were instructed to seek shelter throughout the stadium concourses as lightning threats and torrential rain swept across the venue.

The delay stretched beyond two hours, creating the longest weather interruption of the tournament so far. Grounds staff were later required to clear standing water from sections of the pitch before play could safely resume.

When the match eventually restarted, any hope that the interruption might disrupt France's rhythm quickly disappeared.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Iraq gifted France a second goal through a costly defensive mistake.

A poor back pass from defender Zaid Tahseen created danger inside Iraq's penalty area. Dembele reacted first, collecting possession before unselfishly squaring the ball for Mbappe, who calmly tapped into an empty net for his second goal of the evening and fourth of the tournament.

The goal effectively ended the contest.

France continued to dominate possession and territory, with Iraq struggling to mount a response against one of the tournament favourites.

Dembele then got on the scoresheet in the 66th minute after controlling an incisive pass from Michael Olise before finishing low beyond Basil to make it 3-0.

The reigning Ballon d'Or winner's goal capped another impressive attacking display from Didier Deschamps' side, who have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the title alongside defending champions Argentina and Spain.

Mbappe nearly completed his second consecutive World Cup hat-trick but squandered a late breakaway opportunity before being substituted shortly before full-time to warm applause from the French supporters who remained inside the stadium after the lengthy weather delay.

The match also marked a personal milestone for the 27-year-old, who was making his 100th appearance for France.

Already a World Cup winner from 2018 and a finalist in 2022, Mbappe continues to strengthen his place among football's all-time greats. Playing in his third World Cup, he has now surpassed Brazilian legend Ronaldo's tally of 15 World Cup goals and moved level with Klose on 16.

For Iraq, the defeat leaves a difficult path to the knockout rounds.

Coach Graham Arnold's side remain without a point after consecutive defeats and may also have concerns over leading striker Aymen Hussein, who was forced off in the 26th minute with an apparent injury. Hussein, Iraq's scorer in the tournament opener, appeared uncomfortable before making way for Ali Al-Hamadi.

The Iraqis must now defeat Senegal in their final group match and hope other results go their way if they are to have any chance of progressing among the best third-placed teams.

France, meanwhile, can begin preparing for the knockout stage.

Another victory, another clean sheet and another Mbappe masterclass have reinforced their status as genuine contenders for a third World Cup crown.

And while Messi may currently hold the record as the tournament's greatest goalscorer, Mbappe's relentless pursuit suggests that battle is far from over.
