Over 60,000 Argentinian Fans Sign Petition Demanding Replay of 2026 World Cup Final

Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has triggered a campaign among some supporters calling for the match to be replayed. A petition launched online has attracted thousands of signatures, with fans questioning refereeing decisions during the final and urging FIFA to review the outcome.

According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the online campaign has gathered more than 61,500 signatures since it was launched by Argentine fan Gisela Sanchez.

The petition questions the performance of Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic during the final, which was played last Sunday in New York. Sanchez called on FIFA to review several refereeing decisions that she claims affected the outcome of the match.

However, the petition does not provide documented evidence to support the allegations, and FIFA regulations do not allow a match to be replayed solely because of fan dissatisfaction or disputed refereeing decisions.

A World Cup match can only be replayed under exceptional circumstances outlined in FIFA’s sporting regulations or through a formal decision by the governing body’s competent authorities.

This is not the first protest campaign to emerge from the 2026 World Cup. A similar French petition reportedly gathered more than 82,000 signatures demanding a replay of France’s semi-final defeat to Spain, following controversy over a penalty incident involving Lamine Yamal.

Spain were crowned world champions after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time to secure victory over Argentina.
