The Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a series of shooting incidents that occurred in parts of the state on Tuesday, leaving several persons injured and raising fresh security concerns among residents.
Police authorities said the Command has already deployed specialised investigative teams and reinforced security measures in affected areas as efforts intensify to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, immediately ordered the activation of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), alongside operational and intelligence departments, to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
According to the statement, the investigation will focus not only on the direct perpetrators but also on individuals suspected of sponsoring or facilitating the violence.
“The Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit alongside the Department of Operations and intelligence units to commence a thorough investigation aimed at arresting and prosecuting those responsible,” Ojelabi stated.
The police spokesman assured residents that normalcy had been restored in the affected locations and that proactive measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
“The Command wishes to reassure residents that all necessary steps have been taken as normalcy has been restored to the areas and measures have been implemented to prevent any recurrence,” he said.
Ojelabi disclosed that security presence had been strengthened in the affected communities while intelligence-led operations were ongoing.
“Security has been reinforced in the affected areas, while intensive intelligence-led operations are ongoing to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors regardless of societal or political status,” he added.
The Command further confirmed that victims injured during the attacks were promptly evacuated by police officers to medical facilities for treatment.
“The injured victims were promptly evacuated to medical facilities by our officers for treatment and are currently responding positively to medical care,” Ojelabi said.
The Commissioner of Police appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while supporting ongoing investigations.
He encouraged members of the public with useful information to contact the nearest police station or use the Command’s emergency communication channels.
Police assured residents that all information provided would be treated confidentially.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, Ojelabi said the police would remain relentless in their efforts to ensure all those connected to the attacks are brought to justice.
“The Osun State Police Command remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and will not relent in its efforts to ensure that those behind these criminal acts are brought to justice,” the statement said.
The Command also warned individuals and groups against taking the law into their own hands or engaging in activities capable of threatening public peace and security across the state.
Security analysts say the swift deployment of investigative and operational assets reflects growing concerns over maintaining stability and preventing further violence as authorities continue efforts to identify those behind the shootings.
