The Netherlands delivered one of the most dominant performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, dismantling Sweden 5-1 in a Group F clash at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Inspired by a brilliant display from Cody Gakpo, Ronald Koeman's side raced into an early lead before producing a devastating second-half spell that left Sweden with little chance of mounting a comeback.
The victory was built on ruthless efficiency and clinical finishing, with the Dutch converting their opportunities while exposing defensive weaknesses in the Swedish backline.

The Netherlands wasted little time asserting their authority.
Just five minutes into the contest, Gakpo delivered a dangerous cross from the left flank and Brian Brobbey was on hand to finish from close range for the opening goal.
The pressure continued to mount on Sweden and the Oranje doubled their advantage in the 17th minute when Denzel Dumfries surged down the right wing before delivering a low cross that Brobbey turned home for his second goal of the evening.
The early goals reflected the Dutch dominance in the opening half, where they controlled possession and repeatedly found spaces behind Sweden's defensive structure.
Koeman's side entered the interval with a comfortable lead and appeared in complete control of proceedings.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were effectively extinguished within minutes of the restart.
Gakpo extended the lead in the 47th minute, guiding home another delivery from Dumfries to make it 3-0.
Seven minutes later, the Liverpool forward struck again after being set up by Crysencio Summerville, completing a devastating spell that put the result beyond doubt.
Sweden managed to pull one back in the 59th minute through substitute Anthony Elanga, who finished neatly after being played through by Alexander Isak.

However, the goal proved little more than a consolation.
Summerville added a fifth goal in the closing stages after combining with Memphis Depay to complete a comprehensive Dutch victory.
The statistics underlined the gulf between both sides.
The Netherlands recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.47 compared to Sweden's 0.98 and converted all three of their clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Although Sweden attempted more shots overall, the Dutch were far more clinical, placing seven of their 10 efforts on target.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen also played a crucial role, producing seven saves to frustrate Sweden whenever they threatened to reduce the deficit.
At the opposite end, Sweden struggled to cope with the pace, movement and precision of the Dutch attack.
Sweden enjoyed more possession after the interval and showed greater attacking intent following the introduction of Elanga.
The Manchester United winger provided a spark, scoring shortly after coming on and offering a direct threat down the flank.
Viktor Gyokeres and Isak also had moments of influence, but Sweden lacked the cutting edge required to trouble a disciplined Dutch defence.
Despite creating several promising situations, they failed to convert possession into meaningful chances and were repeatedly punished in transition.

While Gakpo grabbed the headlines, several Dutch players produced standout performances.
Dumfries contributed two assists and constantly troubled Sweden with his overlapping runs from right-back.
Summerville also made a significant impact from the bench, registering a goal and an assist during an energetic second-half display.
Brobbey's first-half brace laid the foundation for victory, while Verbruggen's interventions ensured Sweden never gained any real momentum.

The emphatic win strengthens the Netherlands position in Group F and reinforces their status as one of the tournament's early contenders.
For Sweden, the heavy defeat leaves serious questions about their defensive organisation and qualification prospects heading into the remaining group matches.
For the Dutch, however, this was more than just three points.
It was a statement performance from a side that combined attacking flair, tactical discipline and ruthless finishing to send a clear warning to the rest of the field.
With Gakpo in inspired form and the team firing on all fronts, the Netherlands have announced themselves as genuine contenders at World Cup 2026.
