A 46-year-old Italian tourist has died after a massive fire swept through a luxury beach resort in the Dominican Republic, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests.

The blaze broke out on Friday at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort, a popular tourist destination located along the Caribbean coast.

Emergency responders launched a large-scale evacuation operation as flames and thick smoke engulfed sections of the resort, prompting concerns for the safety of hundreds of visitors and staff.

According to a statement issued by the Dominican Republic’s DAEH emergency services and reported by local media, the victim was identified as a 46-year-old woman from Italy.

Authorities said three other people were transported to medical facilities for treatment, while six additional individuals received medical attention at the scene.

Drone footage released following the incident showed huge plumes of dark smoke rising above the resort complex as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death were not immediately disclosed and officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

The evacuation of approximately 1,700 guests was carried out as a precautionary measure while emergency teams responded to the incident.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation to establish how the fire started and assess the extent of the damage to the resort.

The Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach is one of the Dominican Republic’s well-known beachfront resorts, attracting tourists from Europe, North America and other parts of the world.
